About

What is Mintern?

Mintern is the world’s first early- to mid-career internship recruiting platform.

A portmanteau of the words “mid-career” and “intern”, Mintern is an online job board for early to mid-career switchers. We believe in life-long learning, normalizing non-linear careers, and a skills-based approach to hiring with a focus on transferable skills.

Most companies offer internships only to students currently enrolled in Bachelor’s or graduate university programs. We’re here to change that.

The world is constantly changing. Why should careers paths remain the same? Our mission is to democratize access to internships and career exploration, regardless of age, in order to help career pivoters find the right job, no matter where they are currently in their career journey.

Let’s Define Some Terms

What is a minternship?

Minternships are internships designed for individuals who already have some professional experience and are looking to explore a new career path or industry.

We recommend that a minternship be anywhere between 3 months and 12 months in duration.

What is a mintern?

A mintern is a professional who already brings some years of work experience who is looking to explore a new career path or industry by taking on a minternship.

A mintern can be a temporary employee, a fixed contractor, or a contract-to-hire. This all depends on the needs of the organization and the job seeker.

Our Philosophy

A Skills-based Approach

At Mintern we believe in a skills-based approach to hiring. Skills-based hiring focuses on a candidate’s actual abilities and competencies rather than their traditional qualifications like degrees or years of experience. It prioritizes whether a candidate can demonstrate they possess the necessary skills to succeed in a role, regardless of how they acquired those skills.

Who Benefits from a Minternship?

Benefits to the Employer

Minternships are a great a way for employers to gain experienced talent for the fraction of the cost. Those looking to switch careers are often willing to take a pay cut to break into a new field which they do not have experience, and as they already bring some years of work experience in another field or industry, this is a great way for employers to gain experienced talent for a fraction of the cost.

Additionally, minterns possess diverse skill sets from their previous career, flexibility with regards to pay, willingness to learn and adapt quickly to new challenges, prior business etiquette, are uniquely driven to succeed. Minterns can bring both a student-like energy and seasoned experience, fostering innovation and diverse perspectives. By valuing generalist skills over degrees, resumes, or connections, companies can identify candidates who are adaptable, innovative, and well-suited for the dynamic nature of modern work environments.

Benefits to the Mintern

Making a career transition without the necessary job experience can be challenging for career switchers. Minternships are a great opportunity for job seekers to gain experience in a different industry or field! Upskilling via online coursework and certifications is great, but nothing compares to putting skills to practice in the real world by actually doing! Minternships provide career pivoters the unique opportunity to try their hand at something new, whether that be due to wanting to pivot careers, returning to the workforce after a break (e.g., parental leave or caregiving), or simply exploring a passion project.

The Perfect Win-Win

Minternships provide exploration for both the employer and the job seeker. Minternships offer a way for job seekers to break into a new field and a way for employers to gain experienced, adaptable talent for the fraction of the cost.
